Wallback is a rural residential community with mountainous terrain located just off Interstate 79 at Exit 34. Lake Sampson and the Wallback Wildlife Management Area (WMA) are only five minutes from the exit. Lake Sampson (also known as Wallback Lake) provides fishing, a 2-mile graveled walking or bicycling trail surrounding the lake, and a public target range. West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) stocks the lake with trout monthly from February to May.

Clay County resident Fred Sampson started a campaign in 1996 for public ownership of a dam to be constructed by Fola Coal as mitigation for ruin of flowing waterways resulting from coal mining operations. He stayed with the project through its completion in 2007, resulting in the Lake Sampson facility enjoyed today. The West Virginia Legislature named the lake for Mr. Sampson because of his leadership role in the project’s development as a volunteer.

Wallback WMA preserves 11,757 acres as public land for hunting and fishing. Hunters find ample deer, turkey and other small game. Bass, walleye, muskie and catfish are caught in the Elk River and stocked trout are caught in Laurel Creek.

Scented Wonders, located on Left Bank Road in Wallback, is a scented candle manufacturer owned by sisters Neketa McLaughlin and Karen Boatwright. The ladies opened the company in 2001 and produce about 5,000 candles each year. “Most of our sales are wholesale or for fundraisers,” explained Ms. McLaughlin. “Our products allow children to sell a low price item (under $10 per candle) and make a good profit (about 25 percent).” For more information about Scented Wonders call 304-587-4068.

Ms. McLaughlin’s husband David is Pastor of the Little Laurel Missionary Baptist Church. Their two children are both in college. “Wallback is a great place to live. It’s a quiet, laid back community with wonderful neighbors,” said Ms. McLaughlin. “We enjoy watching the deer and nature around us.”
