Valley Fork is a rural residential community located on State Highway 36 with direct access to Interstate 79, less than 3 miles away. The community is served by a post office.

Residents Emil and Carolyn Short enjoy living “out in the country.” Emil’s family came to Valley Fork in 1944. He was only 10 years old. When he married Carolyn they moved to Ohio, but returned to the family homeplace to retire in 2003. The Shorts are very active volunteers with the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad Co-Op.

Once bustling with 120 students, Valley Fork Elementary School was closed during consolidations in 2006. The school now provides an LPN program in partnership with New River Community and Technical College, certifications in Behavioral Health, Phlebotomy, Computers, Business, Math, English and other programs as a satellite campus for Kanawha Valley Community & Technical College.

For more information on classes offered at the college call Kim Sovine 304-587-1191 or 304-766-5707 or email at ksovine@wvsctc.edu.
