With a population of about 2,300 people, the City of Spencer is big enough for the convenience of a Walmart and small enough to retain its historic single screen movie house, the Robey. The town is located at the intersection of State Highways 119 and 33. It provides a services hub for a large rural area between Ripley to the west, Elizabeth to the north, Grantsville to the east and Clendenin to the south.

Roane County was formed by the Virginia Legislature in 1856. It was named for Spencer Roane, who was a local circuit court judge. The City of Spencer, originally named Tanner’s Crossroads, Cassville, then New California, was renamed in his honor in 1858 and established as the county seat. It has a rich history of logging, natural gas and oil wells, and coal mining.

Today restaurants, retail stores, banks, hardware stores and a large variety of industries conduct business in Spencer and surrounding Roane County.

In 2009 Mustang Survival, producer of life jackets and other survival gear for military, professional, and recreational users, opened a manufacturing facility in Spencer. The company, based in British Columbia, already had a plant in nearby Elizabeth. Adding the Spencer facility doubles Mustang’s U.S. manufacturing capacity. The Spencer facility was selected based on its proximity to Mustang’s current operations in Elizabeth, as well as the community’s extensive labor expertise in life safety related equipment manufacturing.

Scenic beauty and recreational opportunities abound in Spencer.
