Maysel is a quiet residential community located on State Highway 4. It is served by a post office and convenience businesses including an Exxon station. Residents say they enjoy living in the quiet community where they know their neighbors.

An Agriculture Fair is held annually to provide recognition and support to 4-H and Future Famers of America (FFA) members at the Clay County Park in Maysel. Exhibits feature 4-H projects including cooking, sport fishing, birds, insects, and animals. The livestock exhibition and sale is the highlight with entries from both 4-H and FFA members. The Ag Fair, first held in 1993, helps to develop Clay County youth leadership and is well supported by the community. Clay County Park is located at the top of a hill in Maysel. It has walking trails, a baseball park used by Clay County High School and the Howard T. Knotts Memorial Building. The building is used as a community center.

Howard T. Knotts was a native of Clay County. He served as President of the Clay County Farm Bureau, Clay County Parks Project, Clay County Agriculture Youth Fair and the Big Otter Senior Center. During his 35 years with the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA), Mr. Knotts served as Director of both the Rural Resources Division and the Publications Division and was Chairman of the WVDA’s Division Directors. He designed and supervised construction of the Charleston Farmers’ Market and represented WVDA in the WV Agriculture and Forestry Hall of Fame, Mountain State Art and Craft Fair, Woodland Owners Association, and Coyote Control Committee. He served on the Board of Directors for the WV Poultry Association, Agricultural Industries Association and Future Farmers of America Alumni Association. He was elected National President of the Communication Officers of State Departments of Agriculture. In additon, Mr. Knotts moderated WVDA’s weekly television show, “Today in Agriculture.”
