The town was first called "Adonijah" after King David's fourth son in the Bible. According to local residents, the name was changed to "Sizemores" during the Civil War period, but a spelling error was made in the recording documents and the town has been "Lizemores" ever since.
Lizemores Elementary School serves the community for education and as a community center. There is also a large Christian Center that assists people in the community with a variety of needs.
The Lizemores Volunteer Fire Department provides emergency fire and ambulance service to a wide rural area surrounding Lizemores. Firemen visit Lizemores and H. E. White Elementary Schools to provide fire safety and disaster preparedness training to students.
The firemen and their families are very active in organizing community activities including Lizemores Days with a Beauty Pageant, an Annual Pig Roast featuring the Lizemores Idol competition, and a Christmas Toy Drive similar to Toys for Tots.
